457 – Temporary Work (Skilled) Visa

About this Visa

The Temporary Work (Skilled) Visa (457) allows skilled workers to come to Australia and worked for an approved business for up to 4 years. Applicant must be sponsored by an approved business. A business can sponsor someone for this visa if they cannot find an Australian citizen or permanent resident to do the skilled work. You can be in or outside Australia when you lodge the application.

457 Visa Requirements

  1. Be nominated to work in an approved occupation on the Skilled Occupation Lists
  2. Meet the skill requirements for the nominated occupation
  3. Meet registration and licensing obligations
  4. Speak vocational English (IELTS – overall test score of at least 5.0 with a score of at least 4.5 in each of the four components)
  5. Have been nominated by an approved business

Before and how to apply

  1. This is a sponsored visa. Before you apply, your employer must:
    1. Become an approved sponsor
    2. Nominate you for a position
  2. Prepare you documents
  3. Lodge visa application

 

Visa Holder Obligation

There are certain conditions which apply to you depending on whether you are the primary or a secondary visa holder.

  • Condition 8107 applies to all primary visa holders
  • Condition 8501 applies to all primary and secondary visa holders

 

 

 

 

 

 

Condition 8107

 

This condition is only relevant to a primary holder. You must:

  • Only work in your nominated occupation
  • Start work within 90 days of arrival in Australia
  • Only work for the sponsor, who nominated the position you are working in
  • Not cease employment for a period of more than 90 consecutive days
  • Obtain any license, registration or membership necessary to perform your occupation in Australia and comply with any provisions

 

Condition 8501

 

This condition is relevant for all primary and secondary visa holders. You must maintain adequate arrangements for health insurance while you are in Australia
